Site No. 3 - Ridge and Valley Sod Farms Updates

A new sod farm has been created near the Etowah Indian Mounds (see map page 34). This sod farm, called the Legacy Sod Farm, is also near the Atlanta Sod farm. Recent good finds in the fall of 2001 include Marbled Godwit, Willet, both dowitchers, and Baird's Sandpiper. To reach it from I-75 north, take exit 283 for Allatoona Road. Turn left, and go 0.8 mile to turn left again on Old Alabama Road. This is immediately past US 41, which has an overpass over Allatoona Road with two ramps. Go under the overpass, past the ramp on the left, and then make the left on Old Alabama. Continue 4.1 miles to Douthit Ferry Road, and turn right. The sod farm begins on your right in 0.2 mile after you cross the Etowah River. Check especially any of the small ponds, but bear in mind shoulder space is sometimes limited so use what you can. The sod farm continues for 0.4 mile, then turn right on Indian Mounds Road. The sod farm continues on both sides of the road for 0.9 mile to the Etowah Mounds, so scan carefully along the way. Check open sod and the several small ponds on both sides of the road. You can depart the area by going back the way you came, continuing past the Indian Mounds to GA 113 in Cartersville, or by going back to Douthit Ferry and turning right. This will also take you to GA 113 in 1.6 miles but near the Atlanta Sod Farm and you can pick up the printed directions from the book.
